7.5km - 3 laps of The Ruby course

The Ruby7.5

7.5km South Island

Entries capped at 30

We are holding The Ruby series of swim races in the afternoon of Saturday 17th Jan. We know the wind might pick up, we know we are risking the calm of the morning against the laid back feel of a summers afternoon / evening. We know ! But hell, we are going to try it.

"The Ruby rages against the hypocrisy of a society that continually promises us the impossible: fame, beauty, wealth, fitness, endurance, immortality, life without pain. Now it all comes together with The Ruby, a relentless, dizzying take on the male fear of losing power that's a wild, orgiastic swim masterpiece"

- T. Durden

{originally - Bret Eastonn Ellis, Gear Magazine, about Fight Club}

Challenge Wanaka moved dates for 2015 and left an opening for something similar (but different) at the end of the school holidays.

13 age groups.

Under 15, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+

Lets just say...

Well Great!! Because now you can give your (delete as appropriate) Mum, Dad, Sister, brother, Mother-in-Law, best friend, best man, lover, mistress, FB, a free weekend in Wanaka to either compete themselves or come watch you. How good is that!!

The Ruby10  - A Marathon Swim. An environmental gesture.

Think you can step up? Think 10km is Going Long? Bloody right it is! It’s a good run, let alone a good swim.

But wait. There's more...

It can today be announced, and some may say in a surprisingly bizarre twist, it has been discovered by local open water swimming activists and lake interest scientific  'ginger groups' that multiple circumnavigations of Ruby Island create a type of energy vortex.

Physical effort generating muscular electrical and magnetic micro pulses combined with the strong inner mindfulness required to undertake the lonely path of a 10km swim - around and around in circles seemingly forever, this unexpected combination has a cleansing and purifying effect on the Lake water in that area.

It was further observed that when the effect was multiplied with more people swimming, particularly swimmers in a neoprene wet suit, the volume of water quality improvement increased by a logarithmic & exponential amount to include a massive circular swathe of water around  Ruby Island.

An experimental drone, sent high above and controlled from a tent on Roys Peak, recorded the water practically glowed with a basal long-wave red luminescence, similar to aurora.

Further human-energy-as-a-resource investigations are on-going.

Race entry will open on April 2nd 2017. Further info to follow.
